Local device networks || 0- . -1 . 2004
http://radio.weblogs.com/0105910/2004/10/08.html#a990 In another overview article last week, Roland Piquepaille describes a project which uses short-range RFID tags on various pocket items (wallet, keys, etc), so that one particular device can alert you if any other item is missing. Next up is to build contextual awareness of different settings: the system realizes you have a meeting scheduled and need to have a computer handy, or realizes that you're in a situation where you don't need particular items, and so on. This reminds me of a piece Kevin Lynch wrote a year ago, during initial Central design, about how software tools and various devices need to communicate on a local level, in addition to remote communications. http://www.markme.com/jd/archives/006105.cfm
Cooperative Devices || 0- . -1 . 2004
http://www.klynch.com/archives/000021.html Along the lines of a multitude of applications, we're also headed for a world of multiple devices that can cooperate with each other. Our challenge over the next few years will be designing these applications so they can be used to multiply each other's value through combination, even as they run in a number of different places and devices.
Portable Internet || 0- . -1 . 2004
http://www.itu.int/osg/spu/publications/portableinternet/ Rajesh Jain points to a report from the International Telecommunication Union about the merging of three distinct types of communications technologies to create meshes of coverage over large areas. The WiMAX and IMT-2000 protocols can provide coverage for up to 50 kilometers from a base station; WiFi, 802.11b and others handle intermediate-range connections; and other protocols such as Bluetooth and RFID allow for connections within the personal range. Highly-developed areas already tend to have permanent landlines, increasing in capability as each decade's new technology eclipses the previous decade, but developing countries can skip all that and move to a combination of fixed-connection and wireless mesh, with the side benefit of enabling connectivity models that let you easily move around. But then, the security models start to change too.....

Phineus - naam voor project || 6- . -0 . 2003
Phineus by James Hunter -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Phineus, the son of Agenor, was a king of Thrace and a prophet. Because he prophesied too truly, revealing too much of the gods' truth to humans, Zeus blinded him and set the Harpies to plague him. Whenever Phineus sat down to eat, the Harpies would swoop down and steal the food; what little food they left would be foul-smelling and unpalatable. When Jason and the Argonauts arrived in Phineus' land, they rid his household of the curse by having the winged Boreads pursue the Harpies; the goddess Iris prevented the Boreads from killing the Harpies by promising that Phineus would not be troubled again. In return for the Argonauts' help, Phineus foretold the results of their quest, and revealed to them how they should get past the hazard of the Symplegades. -- http://www.pantheon.org/articles/p/phineus.html
